I probably have to make it clear that i’m looking at that film on my own terms as well as in isolation from its franchise. As a prequel to Alien, it fucking hums. Think of it as a film of images, don’t think of it as part of a greater continuum. Narratively and conceptually it is completely awful. Think of it like a standalone lost Cronenberg piece or as a single separate part of Scott’s oeuvre and it’s fine and gripping even if its completely moronic story is a grievous insult to, as it so smarmily says, “300 years of Darwinism” (it's set in the future). Think of it as part of a franchise and it’s offensively bad, undermining the Alien universe completely (well not completely, it depends if you like the idea of the white aliens being big chaps given their relationship to the ship in Alien, and I don’t mind that so much.) But I can’t ignore the fact that a load of weird, cool shit happens, and on that level it works.
