Culturally, British Writer-Director Edgar Wright is about my favourite thing to come out of the back end of Generation X. Hur, that's right, he was shit out by Generation X, which goes a way toward explaining his studded glove and trademark sneer. Anyway, Edgar Wright represents precisely what you get when you take a love of very mainstream 70s and 80s action and horror fare and refract it through the lens of British sitcom and stoical, experimental 70s International cinema. Had I watched more horror as a teen it'd be very much my own milieu. As it is it's damned close. Would that I was an effervescent fountain of good-natured, hyperkinetic creativity too. Which I'm not. Would that I had his feeling for tone and talent for evoking the energy of place and of groups of people. Which I sure haven't. If I was only funny at all. If I was more like him I'd be inspired to be more like him. As it is I'm merely a big fan of his work.

Here's Edgar Wright giving us a bit of a write up of his top 11 movies available in the US Criterion DVD collection. Every one of them is indispensable stuff.
