I've been shopping with Waterstone's online rather than Amazon since Kraken came out in 2010, as a reaction to Amazon's McMillan-de-listing stunt earlier in the year. I must say that in that time I have bought one book off Amazon as well out of simple forgetfulness. This politics thing is hard. The book was The Quantum Thief though, so it at least went to a worthy cause.
How would I feel about a world without Waterstone's, hypothetically? Perfectly fine I guess. Though not having any bookshops to wander into any longer would likely just drive me into the arms of the pub's plush seating even earlier whenever I go into town. I think I'll live. As for the loss of HMV itself? Copy and paste what I just aid about Waterstone's but with the names changed and "music" in place of "book".
Where possible I would like to buy direct from publishers, but the world doesn't work that way. Increasingly I'm ready to make the move to ebook over paperback, but can't deny that the Kindle is looking like the strongest venue for doing that.
And the world narrows down to a single point.
